When using EQ (equalization) to boost specific frequency bands, the amplitude of the digital signal increases accordingly. If the original signal is already close to 0 dB (the upper limit of digital audio), additional gain can result in digital clipping, causing harsh distortion.
To address this, Luxsin devices implement a dynamic gain compensation mechanism, based on the following principles:
1. Why do we use a Pre-amp?
In the digital domain, EQ follows the principle of “cut before boost.” When a frequency band is boosted (for example, bass +6 dB), the Pre-amp reduces the overall signal level by the same amount (–6 dB) in advance.
This creates sufficient headroom for EQ adjustments, ensuring that even with significant boosts, the signal remains clean and free from distortion.
2. Why doesn’t the volume seem to decrease when EQ is enabled on Luxsin devices?
On most devices, enabling EQ results in a noticeable drop in volume due to digital attenuation. However, Luxsin devices take a more advanced approach:
-
Analog/Hardware-Level Gain Compensation: The DAC architecture is not constantly operating at full-scale output. Instead, it retains sufficient power headroom at the hardware level.
-
Automatic Level Alignment: When the system detects a reduction in Pre-amp (digital attenuation), it automatically compensates by increasing the analog output stage or applying precise internal gain adjustments.
3. Why does adjusting the Pre-amp feel like it has no audible effect?
This is actually a sign of the system’s sophisticated design. When you adjust the Pre-amp, the system continuously and automatically compensates for any perceived loudness changes.
-
What you hear: A consistent volume level with no sudden jumps or drops.
-
What is actually happening: You are reallocating digital headroom. By lowering the Pre-amp, you are effectively preventing potential clipping caused by boosted frequencies, even though the perceived loudness remains unchanged.
Summary
The design philosophy of Luxsin devices is to let users “focus on tonal shaping, not gain staging.” You simply adjust the EQ to your preference, while the system intelligently manages the complex balance between volume and distortion in the background.
The fact that you don’t perceive volume changes is precisely because the system is performing highly accurate gain compensation behind the scenes. For the best experience, we recommend setting the Pre-amp to Auto, allowing the system to manage headroom and gain compensation automatically.
